Buying your first home: the six steps

September 6, 2026

From getting pre-approved to closing day, here is the path most first-time buyers follow.

First, get pre-approved for a mortgage so you know your budget and sellers take you seriously. Second, list your must-haves and nice-to-haves. Be honest about the difference — it keeps your search focused. Third, tour homes. Visit at different times of day and check commute, noise, and light. Fourth, make an offer. Your agent will help you price it against recent sales in the area. Fifth, schedule an inspection. If it finds problems, you can renegotiate or walk away. Sixth, close. Review every document, confirm the final costs, and get the keys.
